Walk to End Alzheimer’s flowers tell special stories

Schedule of Events: Registration at 8 a. Ceremony at 9 a. Walk at a. The colors of the Promise Garden flowers — purple, yellow, blue and orange — represent the different reasons why people walk to end this disease. The money raised will help the Association provide care and support to families in Iowa, while also advancing critical research toward methods of treatment and ultimately a cure.

The health and safety of the participants, volunteers and staff are the top priorities. All local events will implement safety protocols including physical distancing, contactless registration, hand sanitizing stations and more. Masks will be available on-site. In Iowa alone, there are more than 66, people living with the disease and 73, caregivers.

Walk to End Alzheimer’s Returns

Instead of a big, in-person gathering, most of the Alzheimer's Association Walk to End Alzheimer's has gone remote, using the virtual events platform Mainstage. After that, families are invited to walk in small groups around their neighborhood. The Mainstage phone app will allow participants to keep track of their steps as well as the chance to hear inspirational stories from families with Alzheimer's. The only in-person event in Willmar will be a drive-through of the specially planted Promise Garden from 9 a. Orange are advocates for the cause, yellow are caregivers, purple are people who have lost someone to the disease and blue are people who have dementia or Alzheimer's. The Mainstage platform, while online, will give walk participants the opportunity to visit "booths" and gather information about Alzheimer's disease, learn about advocacy efforts and visit national sponsors.

Participants will have the option to attend the in-person event or participate from home and walk in their own neighborhood. They can also pick up and personalize their Promise Garden flower prior to the opening ceremony, which starts at am. They can also watch a pre-recorded Opening Ceremony, set a walking distance goal and track their progress as they walk. The app even features an augmented reality finish line.

Walk to End Alzheimer's held its annual event at the riverfront Saturday in an effort to raise funds for Alzheimer's research, care and support. One of the most poignant parts of every walk event, according to walk manager Brandi Keller, is the Promise Garden where individuals can place their pinwheel flowers in the garden with several different colors symbolizing someone living with Alzheimer's or another form of dementia, someone having lost a loved one to Alzheimer's or someone caring for a loved one with Alzheimer's. Karen Brunner, an attendee at the walk, said she was there to honor her grandfather who lived with Alzheimer's for many years before his passing.
